Heritage Trail

Clones Heritage Trail starts at the old market house and goes on to visit Clones High Cross, St. Tighernach’s church, Motte and Bailey fort, Round Tower cemetery & St. Tighernach’s Sarcophagus, The Cassandra Hand Centre, The Wee Abbey, The Ulster Canal Stores Visitors Centre, and other sites of interest.

Walkers will learn about the Gaelic chiefs, the McMahons, how the town suffered during the famine and how the establishment of the Irish Free State effected Clones, the improvement of Clones in the 19th Century, especially with the coming of the railways and the Ulster Canal. There are plans currently in the works to revive parts of the canal and create new greenways, including building a Marina next to the Canal Stores.
